What's the recovery time after implant surgery?

You've decided on dental implants to restore your smile, but now you're wondering how long the recovery will take. Fortunately, most people are pleasantly surprised to find how straightforward the process actually is.

Initial Healing: What to Expect

Immediate recovery (1-3 days):

  • Mild to moderate swelling and discomfort
  • Soft diet recommended
  • Most people return to work within 1–2 days
  • You can typically control any pain with prescription or OTC medications

First week:

  • Minor swelling peaks around day 2-3, then gradually decreases
  • Your dentist will remove stitches after 7–10 days
  • You can gradually return to normal activities

The Long-Term Process: Osseointegration

While you'll feel back to your usual self relatively quickly, complete healing happens over the next several months:

  • Soft tissues around the implant heal fully over the next 2-4 weeks
  • Full integration with the jawbone takes place over the next 3–6 months

You'll wear a temporary crown during the healing phase and can return to eating normally; however, avoid extremely hard or sticky foods near the implant site.

Factors Affecting Recovery

Your healing timeline is unique and depends on several factors:

  • Number of implants placed
  • Your overall health and healing ability
  • How well you follow post-operative instructions
  • Not smoking, which significantly slows healing
