At Pryor Dental, we are committed to providing you and your family with gentle care in a warm, friendly, and comfortable environment. Our goal is to welcome you into a warm, supportive environment where your comfort comes first and dental anxiety fades away. Dr. Peter B. Pryor Jr. brings over a decade of advanced dental expertise back home to the Winston-Salem community. After completing his undergraduate degree and a rigorous two year hospital residency right here at Wake Forest University, followed by years of dedicated private practice, he established Pryor Dental to provide the high-quality, personalized care our neighbors deserve.

Dentistry is constantly evolving, which is why Dr. Pryor is committed to lifelong learning. Through his advanced training at the Dawson Academy and active memberships in elite groups like the Seattle Study Club and Spear Study Group, he brings state-of-the-art techniques directly to our patients. We believe that a well-informed patient experiences better health outcomes. Instead of simply treating symptoms, we take the time to teach you how oral health impacts your entire body, empowering you to maintain your smile confidently between your routine visits.

Coming to Pryor Dental for regular cleanings and examinations allows us to detect future oral problems before they become worse, as well as recommend procedures that might fix your teeth, gums, or smile. The quicker we can catch a problem, the smaller and less expensive it tends to be. We are always accepting new patients, and look forward to expanding our family every day. We believe in starting and maintaining life-long patient relationships so that our patients can benefit from long term dental care. We are committed to keeping your beautiful smile healthy for life!

How Prevention and Maintenance Differ

For easy reference, we use prevention and maintenance interchangeably under the "general dentistry" umbrella, but they are different. Below, we explain the fundamental differences.

Preventive Dentistry

Prevention includes your six-month checkups and teeth cleanings in Winston-Salem. Prevention may also include any treatment designed to "prevent" future problems, such as dental sealants.

Maintenance Dentistry

Ideally, by seeing the dentist regularly for checkups and teeth cleanings, you'll require less maintenance in the future, such as fillings, root canals, periodontal treatment, extractions, and more.

General Dentistry

General dentistry is about dental health. It includes the prevention needed to lower oral health risks and the maintenance treatments your dentist recommends to restore dental health when issues arise.

If you want a healthy smile, conscientious brushing and flossing are non-negotiable. Good oral hygiene combined with semi-annual preventive cleanings and exams in Winston-Salem, NC is the best (and only) way you can enjoy a problem-free smile.

woman brushing her teeth When thinking about your oral hygiene, it’s good to establish a routine. Performing the same actions at the same time every day will gradually get you into the groove so brushing and flossing become second nature.

Despite your best intentions, it’s easy to get sloppy with your brushing and flossing habits. The best way to get back on track is by talking to one of our hygienists about proper techniques. If you are going to make the effort, you should be sure you are getting the most out of it.

Proper At-Home Oral Hygiene Habits

You should plan to brush twice a day and floss once, and the whole process shouldn’t take more than five minutes. Start a timer or put on one of your favorite songs so you can be sure you are brushing long enough.

Flossing is critical, but if you aren’t doing it properly, you may be doing more harm than good. Form the floss into a “C” shape and clean one side of a tooth then move to the other side. Change the floss for each tooth because reusing it can actually spread plaque to other teeth.

Dental Cleanings in Winston-Salem

At our Winston-Salem dental practice, we are always more than happy to take time to explain proper hygiene techniques. If you need a refresher, please make an appointment and we will be happy to get you back on track!

Gum disease is actually very easily preventable with good at-home oral health care and regular visits to your Winston-Salem dentist. Many times, gum disease happens because of poor oral hygiene or neglecting to keep your dental cleaning appointments.

Your teeth and gums don't require a lot of complicated procedures to keep healthy; maintenance and care can be straightforward. By taking a few simple steps, you can significantly reduce your risk of having gum disease:

  • Brush and floss your teeth every day
  • Maintain your dental cleanings and exams with Dr. Peter B. Pryor Jr.
  • Ask Dr. Pryor for any tips on proper brushing and flossing
  • Let us know if you have a family history of gum disease
  • Quit smoking and using tobacco products
  • Eat good, healthy, nutritious food
  • Drink plenty of water

Gum disease has been proven to link to your lungs and heart, so it's to your entire body's benefit that we avoid this oral health affliction.

Your gum health also plays a significant role in health disorders like diabetes, respiratory illnesses, Alzheimer's disease, even babies with low birthweights.

The First Step to Healthy Gums Is with Your Dentist

The problem with gum disease and many other dental issues is that they don't really announce themselves. Many diseases and infections carry few symptoms, so it's easy for patients to be lulled into thinking everything is fine. This erroneous thinking can even inspire patients to skip dental appointments.

We urge our patients to always maintain their scheduled appointments and to practice good oral habits at home. Contact Pryor Dental to book your next dental exam and cleaning in 27103!

We look forward to helping patients maintain a beautiful and healthy smile they can be proud of.

Many people ask this question, and the answer is a bit nuanced. Both manual and electric toothbrushes can clean your teeth effectively if used properly. The real difference lies in technique, convenience, and consistency.

Electric toothbrushes have some clear advantages. They make it easier to reach tricky spots in your mouth, especially along the gum line and between teeth. Many models come with built-in timers to ensure you brush for the full two minutes and pressure sensors to prevent brushing too hard. This is something even the most diligent manual brushers can struggle with.

Pros of Electric Toothbrushes:

  • Better Plaque Removal: Oscillating heads can remove more plaque than manual strokes.
  • Built-in Timers: Ensures you brush for the recommended two minutes.
  • Pressure Sensors: Prevents you from brushing too hard and damaging gum tissue.
  • Ease of Use: Great for people with limited mobility or arthritis.

However, a manual toothbrush can do the job just as well if you use it correctly, brush thoroughly, and replace it regularly. An electric toothbrush is like a power tool in your oral hygiene toolbox. It can make the job faster and easier, but a well-used manual brush can still get excellent results.

When You Should Visit Your Dentist

Many people only visit their dentist if they have an oral issue or dental emergency. At Pryor Dental, we encourage people to consider preventative care that can save them pain, discomfort, and money. Regular visits to your Winston-Salem, NC dentist, are so crucial to your oral and general health—we can spot anything from gum disease, tooth decay, to oral cancer.

Most oral health conditions are easily managed when caught early. However, unlike a cold or a minor strain, dental infections and decay cannot heal on their own; left unaddressed, they will worsen over time. Routine visits do more than just leave your mouth feeling fresh and meticulously clean—they protect your immune system, stop silent decay, and safeguard your overall physical wellness. It’s essential to remove food debris and plaque deposits, and the longer you wait, the more of an issue it may become.

Learn More About Gum Disease

Many people have gum disease without knowing; the symptoms are easily ignored or may not exist. If you catch gum disease early enough, it is treatable. Left untreated, gum disease can only get worse. One of the tell-tale signs of gum disease is bleeding gums when you brush or floss. You may also notice redness, swelling, or tenderness on the gumline. Without treatment, the bacteria thrive, and you may develop pockets around your teeth that trap food and particles. You may start to notice persistent bad breath, “longer” teeth from receding gums, or pockets of pus around your teeth.

At this stage, the only thing left is tooth loss. Gum disease isn’t just about fear of tooth loss. Your oral health connects to your overall general health, and an infection in your mouth could have a significant impact on your body, leading to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, arthritis, and more. If you are noticing signs of inflammation or bleeding, please know that our team provides compassionate, judgment-free care. Periodontal (gum) disease is incredibly common, and treating it early is crucial. Because your oral health is inextricably linked to your systemic health, untreated chronic inflammation in the mouth can exacerbate issues like diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis. Whether you require conservative periodontal therapy to save your natural teeth or need to explore secure tooth replacement options after an extraction, we will guide you toward a healthy, functioning smile that restores your confidence.
