Dental crowns are a fantastic way to keep your natural tooth and achieve an aesthetically pleasing smile, making them a common dental procedure for many patients. We can match your crown to your other teeth so it blends seamlessly, and no one will know you have it!

But what’s the process for getting a dental crown?

Let’s take a look at the step-by-step process.

When Is a Dental Crown Used?

We use dental crowns to cover or protect your tooth or as a cosmetic option.

Here are the reasons we may recommend a dental crown:

  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • Extensive tooth decay
  • After root canal therapy
  • To support a dental bridge
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To cover stained or misshapen teeth

The Step-by-Step Dental Crown Process

Once we’ve completed a comprehensive exam and determined a dental crown is the best solution for your smile, these are the steps we’ll follow:

  • We’ll completely numb your tooth with a local anesthetic so that you won’t feel anything during the procedure.
  • Then, we’ll remove any decayed portions of your tooth and reshape it to make room for your custom crown.
  • We’ll take impressions of your tooth and send them to the dental lab.
  • In the meantime, we’ll fit you with a temporary crown to protect your tooth.
  • About two weeks later, you’ll come back to our office so we can remove the temporary crown and cement the new one to your tooth.
  • Before you leave, we’ll check the fit and ensure you can bite down properly.
  • You’ll need to stick to softer foods for a couple of days and be sure to brush gently around your new crown. If you experience any discomfort or sensitivity, you can take over-the-counter pain medication.
